| California's Legislature Prevents Sex Offenders from Obtaining ED Drugs
Aug 30, 2005
A bill passed by California's legislature on Monday (August
29, 2005) could prevent convicted sex offenders from obtaining
state-funded erectile
dysfunction (ED) drugs, such as Viagra
and Levitra. The vote on AB 522 follows a May directive
issued by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. This issue came
to light nationwide in May 2005, after an audit showed New
York State gave Viagra to nearly 200 sex offenders in recent
years. California subsequently found it had distributed the
drug to 137 offenders between April 2004 and May 2005 under
its Medi-Cal system, said Ken August, a spokesman for California
Health Services.
According to Republican Assemblyman George Plescia who sponsored
the law, providing ED drugs like Levitra
and Viagra to convicted sex workers would mean giving a gun
to a bank robber. It could be dangerous for innocent people.
