KAMASUTRA: The Aphorisms on Love
`Vatsyayana Kamasutra' was compiled in about 300 AD almost 1700
years ago by Hindu Brahmin Vatsyayana Mallanaga. Little is known
about him or his other works. Yet, it is one of the earliest
works - if not the first - that discussed sex at its extremes.
' Kama ' means sexual act in the Sanskrit scripting. 'Kamecha'
or 'desire for sex' was elementary act within the Hindu household.
It would have been abnormal not to have sexual desire within
self. Youngsters were married at quite an early age to expose
them to sex before they try to seek it from outer resources.
In the Hindu social structure, pursuit of sexual pleasure was
honored as a path towards religious quest. Sex was as important
as visiting temple everyday and paying your devotion.
Kamasutra is a written exploration of all that one can imagine
during a sexual act. The epic discusses and elaborate every angle,
every position that comes across during the act. The erotic fantasy
defined in Kamasutra became a masterpiece in the Hindu mythology.
It was respected and duly followed by the society to oblige the
physical necessities of human beings.
Kamasutra goes beyond the wildest imagination of a common man.
It defined and explored the inner feelings about human's attitude
towards sex.
Kamasutra is indeed very wild and very elaborate explanation
of human sexual fantasy. At times it supports the aspect of adultery,
seduction and rape - all in pursuit of sex. To some degree extramarital
affairs were bravely supported within Kamasutra.
Sexual arousal in a women is also given due importance
in this Epic. The book maintains that women can woo other
men and comply with her sexual desire. Within the Hindu social
confinement - wives were supposed to be loyal to their men.
But again if men were easily found to be cheating their wives,
they were also directed to cheat on their men. Something our
modern society do not support at all. But it does happen a
lot in the mainframe modern social structure. Sexual liberty
was the class that made Kamasutra such a controversial literature.
In the book women were forced to seek herbal potions to win
back their men - if they were engaged in adultery. There were
herbal therapies during those times, which were supposed to increased
male and female libido. So while Viagra and Levitra are the latest
revelations to your modern sex lives - for the Indian mythology
it's all read, performed and done.
The book also gives an insight to oral sex. Whether it was right
or not was not a question during those days. Oral sex was one
way to increase the pleasure and run into the foreplay. Kamasutra
was simply the best way to keep alive your sexual prowess and
use it at your will. If you get a chance for sex, never miss
it, says the book.
Kamasutra is structured in seven separate sections tracking
life during its various stages in life. Right from his bachelorhood
where man gets ready for sexual performance to his old-age complication - have
been discussed within these seven sections of the book in detail.
But there are several elements of Kamasutra that we'll never
agree with. Like the adultery or some cruel sexual behavior slams
a question mark over its foolproof-ness. Yet the high of eroticism
explained within its text showcase the sexual saga that had gripped
our society long before.
Today we are trying to churn out the true meaning of sex. Hindus
believe they are through with that stage.
