| Pharmaceutical
majors GlaxoSmithKline Plc & Bayer AG went
into an agreement during November 2001 to co-promote & co-develop
a treatment for men against impotency. This was the first major
attempt to promote a drug for Erectile Dysfunction after Viagra
was launched way back in 1998. With their mutual expertise and
combined skills, the two companies developed Levitra and offered
it for the public consumption.
With their strong historical background in healthcare and pharmaceuticals,
the Bayer and GSK co-promotion represented a powerful alliance
committed to improve males' sexual health through their new treatment
therapy.
LEVITRA was successfully launched in the prime markets of United
Kingdom in March, 2003. Soon thereof it was successfully distributed
in other European countries. It won the U.S. approval on 19th
August, 2003 to sell the drug. The drug was the first to rival
Viagra from Pfizer. The announcement, from the United States
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) , meant that Levitra,
an orange pill, will give men an alternative to Pfizer Inc.'s
famous diamond-shaped blue pill Viagra, the drug that transformed
impotence treatment after its 1998 debut as the first oral therapy
for the impotence.
We cannot say that Levitra was extremely successful when its
sales were compared to Viagra. But Levitra had its own advantages
and men were always looking for something that promises better
results at same cost. The drug is believed to work faster and
longer as per the clinical trials. It offers efficacy of up to
24-hours. "We believe that Levitra offers the opportunity
for increased satisfaction for many more men," Andrew
Witty, President, Europe , and GlaxoSmithKline had said in one
of his statement.
IN one medical experiment involving 1,020 men with erectile
dysfunction who took the drug for one year, the average success
rate in maintaining erections improved to 87 % from 14 % with
the 10 mg dose and to 86 % from 16 % with the 20 mg dose.
Through a clinical exploration backed by GlaxoSmithKline
and Bayern AG - Levitra produced the desired results on very
first attempts. It was considered to be more potent than Viagra.
The drug tends to act faster and bring cherished pleasure for
men coping with the challenge of Erectile Dysfunction.
